Abstract
Clinical and hematological observations were carried out on 100 cases of leukemia who were admitted to the Department of Internal Medicine of Busan National University Hospital, the Maryknoll Hospital, the Baptist Hospital and the Benedictine Sisters Hospital during past 6 years, from January, 1967 to December, 1972.
There were 75 acute cases, which included 41 myelocytic, 32 lymphocytic and 2 monocytic forms, and 25 chronic cases consisting of 22 myelocytic and 2 lymphocytic forms.
The male (55 cases) to female (45 cases) ratio was 1.2:1.
On admission, the subjective symptoms were fever (71%), bleeding (45%), headache (35%), dizziness (27%), weight loss (25%) and sore throat (10%), and objective symptoms were splenomegaly (46%), hepatomegaly (42%,), petechia or ecchymosis (40%), infection (35%), lymph node enlargement (27%) and bone tenderness (25%). Spleen and liver were palpable more frequently in chronic leukemia, in 76 % and 56% respectively.
Both Hb and Ht measurments revealed anemia in all cases and in 57.8% less than 6gm/100ml.
W.B.C. count was less than 5,000 per cubic millimeter in 17% and more than 100,000 per cubic millimeter in 31%.
Blood platelet count was less than 80,000 per cubic millimeter in 52% of acute leukemia, and more than 200,000 percubic millimeter in 42.8% of chronic leukemia.
Chest x-ray on 63 cases revealed pulmonary the in 8 cases, hilar adenopathy 4, chronic bronchitis 4, and mitral heart, pneumonia, pulmonary congestion and pleural effusion in 2 cases each respectively.
Fourteen cases expired in the hospitals; most of them were acute leukemia cases (92. 8%) and main causes of death were cerebral hemorrhage (42.9%) and massive gastrointestinal bleeding (28.5%).
